Last month I was lucky enough to visit Cape Town.  My first port of call was the Franschhoek/Stellenbosch area and we popped into the Bergkelder cellar for a Fleur du Cap wine tasting.

We had a charming host – Brad – who let us taste a huge range of the wines and explained each wine’s properties and qualities eloquently and entertainingly.

We started with the whites – trying their Unfiltered Sauvignon Blanc, their White blend and the Chardonnay.  Brad explains here why their Chardonnay is so good – they use French oak barrels but they take care not to over-oak the Chardonnay.

Fleur du cap employs very modern manufacturing methods – including a filtration system that minimises the manhandling of the grapes and uses gas to push down the grapes.  Here’s a video of Brad comparing the technique to a coffee plunger!

The shop was very tempting, and since we’d tasted first-hand how good the wines were we ended up buying a case of the Pinotage.

This Two Oceans flip flop coaster made me laugh!
